“NEST EGG "

OVER £6OO CARRIED IN OLD BRIEF BAG. ELDERLY MAN’S LIFE SAVINGS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. August 17. Some people put their savings in banks or invest them in tempting local body debentures, but there are exceptions, and some strange repositories are used. One elderly Auckland mat), an employee of the Auckland City Council for the past 28 years, has made a practice of keeping his money in an old, brown brief bag. The story about it is unusual. For a number of years he has been in charge of the cloakroom near Graf - ton Bridge. A few days ago he became ill and was taken to the Auckland Hospital. His successor was another city council employee, who discovered the brief bag . hidden behind some mops and brooms in a corner. He opened the bag and was surprised to find that it was filled with banknotes, some £5 notes. some dating back to 21 years ago. Inside the bag was a small parcel which appeared at first sight to be a wrappod-up lunch but when it was opened it was also found to contain banknotes.

The finder counted up to £2OO and then sent the bag and all its contents to the Town Hall, where city officials made a count that reached £642. The owner has’ carried the bag to his work for years and while he worked it was kept in an inconspicuous corner. The contents had accumulated as time went on and represented a considerable portion of a life’s savings out of a comparatively small wage. The money is now in safe custody till the owner can claim il. but it is likely that when he goes back to work the "nest egg" will be kept somewhere else.
