ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report stated: “We have pleasure in presenting the eighth annual report of the Carterton branch of the League of Mothers. Our- membership is now 135 enrolled, with 124 financial members. Eleven new members have been admitted during the year, and one welcomed from another branch, while five have left the district. Interest has been well maintained and attendances at the monthly meetings have been excellent. We feel that we are filling a real need in the community, and that wives and mothers receive help, fellowship, and inspiration from linking themselves with our great movement. The committee wish to thank members for preparing the hall each month and for their readiness to provide and serve afternoon teas. We have again been fortunate with our speakers during the year, and each afternoon has been helpful and interesting. The speakers at the afternoon meetings were:—Mrs Blamires < "Ideals—God’s Tuning Forks”); Miss Higginson ("The Dawn Parade”); Mrs A M. Lewis CA Visit to Norway’’); the Rev W. F. Stent i "Friendship”) ; Mrs Miller Hope ("Nationalism in Music"); Mrs H. H. Cornish (’Personality”); Mr Johannes Anderson ("Native Birds”): Sister Kathleen Every ("Guarding the Adolescent”); Mrs Cleghorn, M.A. ("Schools on the Continent”). Helpful thoughts and excellent hints have been given by members each month.
Fathers' Night in September was a successful function. The speakers were the Rev H. White. Mr W. Sorenson, Mr G. Brown and Mr G. G. Hancox, whose subject was "Careers for Boys.” Our own choir entertained members and guests with glees. In October the Hataitai League paid us their fourth annual visit and provided the whole of the delightful programme. These visits are greatly enjoyed by both branches. We sent each of our visitors back to the city with a bunch of flowers. A beautiful wreath was placed on the Cenotaph on Anzac Day. The Magazine secretary. Mrs G. Stefl'ert, reports an increase in sub-, scribers to the monthly magazine, the' number now being 33. Our little paper is commended to all our members, and it is hoped that we shall have a further increase in subscribers during the coming year. A happy combined picnic with the Greytown branch was held in the Greytown Park in February. Races were organised by the Carterton League and made time pass quickly. Committee members have been very loyal' and have done cheerfully their individual tasks. Their keen co-operation has contributed largely towards the success of the meetings. There are fifteen members in the choir with Mrs D. Gibb Johnston as the able conductor. The members wish to thank Mrs Johnston, and Mrs Irwin. the pianist, for their patience and help during the year, also those ladies who have lent their homes so willingly for the practices, which are always happy overlings. The choir has provided the musical entertainment at the monthly meetings and on "Fathers’ Night" and we feel that we have good reason to be proud of thcii efforts. They provided the afternoon’s programme at the DalefieldMatarawa Institute meeting iri July. We extend our sympathy to all members who are sick and to those who have suffered bereavement. We wish to thank Mrs Beaven for her services as pianist, the managers of St Andrew's Church for the use of the hall, the Press for publishing our reports monthly, and all who have helped to strengthen our movement during the year.
