BOTH DANZIG & CORRIDOR WANTED ATTEMPT TO ISOLATE POLAND. PLAIN SPEAKING IN FRANCE. LONDON, August 17. Herr Hitler's newspaper, the “Voelkischer Beobachter” gives as the basis on which the Polish negotiations can be opened: 1, Recognition of Danzig’s desire to return to Germany and the injustice of the separation; 2, recognition of the Corridor’s artificiality because of the centuries-long connection with Germany, and an admission of the justice of its incorporation in the Reich; and, .3, recognition that these claims will not hamper Poland’s access to the Baltic Sea. which Germany is fully prepared to ensure conditional to granting the above. . The newspaper says that Britain and France, having intentionally made an understanding between Poland and Germany impossible, have forfeited their right to interfere. France has given the recent reported suggestion by the Axis for an armistice” over Danzig a frigid reception, characterising it as Germany’s supreme move to divide the democracies, and the Press has unanimously declared it absurd to suggest that Poland can be isolated from the Allies at this late singe. "Le Figaro” says: “Poland is the sole judge of her interests. She knows she cannot count on our full strength to defend them if necessary.” Poland has begun a national register between the ages of 16 and 60, including women, in order to allot war time jobs, specially for skilled persons. Eighty registration centres in Warsaw were ‘crowded throughout today. The Polish arrests in Silesia include M. Jankowski, leader of the German Workers’ Union. Poland has also closed down the offices of the Young Gei - man Party and the German Workers Guild, the two most prominent minority organisations. ‘The British Associated Press suggests that martial law will be enforced on the Polish border districts if subversion continues.
