DOGS’ CEMETERY
REMOVED BY BUDAPEST AUTHORITIES. The Budapest authorities have just removed a dog cemetery from the courtyard of an old house in Ulloi Street, part of which has been rented as a shop. This cemetery originated years ago. when an old lady who lived in the house had the misfortune to lose her lap-dog. She persuaded the concierge to bury her pet in the courtyard, and ordered a tombstone to mark the spot. This idea found favour with the old lady's friends, and the concierge was persuaded to bury their deceased pets near the first dog's grave for a consideration. No fewer than 19 dogs of all sizes were found buried in the courtyard under tombstones which bore phrases such as "Love is stronger than death,” and “Darling, we remember you still,” and the spot was perpetually visited by sorrowing mistresses and their families.
