NAZI LEADERS MEET
REPORTED DECISIONS REJECTION OF CONFERENCE. MUCH TALK OF GERMAN HONOUR. (Received This Day. 10..35 a.m.) LONDON, August 16. Herr Hitler discussed the latest phases of the European situation with Marshal Goering and Herr Himmler at Berchtesgaden and “No conference, no compromise about Danzig,” is the cue given to the leader-writers of the German Press. Consequently the columns of the newspapers are filled with phrases about Germany’s honour, which it now appears would be involved if the Reich came to a council table. The ordinary German is told that German honour is at stake. The Poles are similarly worked up. Consequently it is difficult to see how everybody’s “honour” is to be satisfied.
The Italian Press appears more concerned with saving peace than saving honour, but the newspapers, with a unanimity that can only be inspired, insist that direct GermanPolish negotiations are the only way of solving the problem. The Pope maintains an active interest in the international situation, but it is stated that reports that his Holiness is arbitrating are ridiculous. Professor Burckhardt, who is back in Danzig, stated that Polish-Danziger conversations had opened in a friend-, ly atmosphere. Nazi legal experts are conferring with Danzigers at Zoppot during the whole of next week, Herr Foerster presiding, with the object of proving the justice of Germany’s attitude on East European questions. ECHO IN DANZIG NO ROOM FOR COMPROMISE. (Received This Day. 10.5 a.m.) DANZIG, August 16. Herr Greiser' and M. Chodacki conferred after which M. Chodacki returned to Warsaw. The Nazi journal “Vorposten” says: "It is a dangerous error to assume that Germany is weakening. The meeting at Salzburg meant that the Axis is absolutely determined on a quick solution of the Danzig question. There is no room for an inorganic compromise.” ACTION BY GERMANY AGAINST POLISH MINORITY. I Independent Cable Service.) WARSAW. August 16. It is officially stated that the Ger-' mans have closed the frontier between the Opole district of German Silesia and the Rybnik district of Polish Silesia. Poles in German Silesia have been deprived of their passports and Polish shops closed. It is understood the measures apply only to the Polish minority. CONFERENCE RIDICULED VIEWS OF BERLIN PAPER. (Received This Day. 10.5 a.m.) BERLIN. August 16. The “Zwoelfuhr Blatt.'’ in an editorial. flatly denies the possibility of an international conference. The article continues: "We have no need of a conference to establish our rights to Danzig. The belief that at least the Corridor question can be solved by a comI promise is as laughable as it is absurd. The Corridor has become unbearable and untenable in Eastern Europe.”
