EKETAHUNA

BOROUGH COUNCIL CONDITIONS OF READING ROOM. (“Tiines-Agc” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor. Mr W. Simpson, presiding. There were also present: Councillors Olsen. Priest. Ryan, Simmers, Marenzi, Page and the Town Clerk. Mr B. Dinnan. A letter was received from the County Council stating that a grant of £6 had been made towards the Reading Room. There had been two complaints, however, at the lack ol heating and the lack of ventilation and the council hoped this would receive attention and also that the room would be aired every morning.

The Mayor said that he had found the air fresh and sweet. There was always a current of air through the room as the doors were always open. His council did not ask very much of the County Council and the room was mostly used by County people coming in to have a look at the papers and periodicals which were purchased mostly for their use. He described the attitude of those associated with the making of the grant as miserable. He moved that when the cheque arrived 1 it bo sent back. The Borough Council did not ask for charity.

The Mayor said the council had gone to considerable expense in the preliminary work of getting the scheme for a nurse's cottage inaugurated. Public spirited people had subscribed £6O to buy a section and after waiting months for the plan to be adopted by the Hospital Board and Health Department, the successful tenderer was now repudiating the contract and forfeiting his deposit. The Hospital Board was trying to insist that he carry it through, though no effort was being made by the Department. The position was one of muddlcment and overlapping. It was decided to write to the Hospital Board drawing its attention to the unreasonable delay.

The council decided to make a grant of £5O towards the centennial memorial if the county did likewise. In regard to the erection of an Odd Fellows’ Hall, it was agreed to offer the lodge a section for £5. the lodge to pay all transfer expenses. A committee consisting of Councillors Ryan, Marenzi and Priest was set up to report on a proposal to erect a caretaker’s hut on the Domain. GIRL GUIDES MEETING OF COMMITTEE.
