SATURDAY’S GOLF PRESIDENT'S TEAM DEFEATS CAPTAIN'S. (“Times-Age” Special ) • A closely contested teams' match was played on the Taratahi links on Saturday last when the president’s side beat the captain’s by 9 games to 8, with one halved. After play was finished both teams adjourned to the Marquis of Normanby Hotel where a dinner was served and the matches fought over again. During the evening Mr A. Kay entertained with several vocal items which were much appreciated. Several toasts were honoured. The afternoon's play and the final wind-up dinner were enjoyed immensely. The following are the individual results, president’s team players being mentioned first in every case: —Brow beat Taverner; B. Booth lost to George; Dudson beat Steel; Taylor lost to Fisher; Goodin beat Hughes; Whitburn lost to Kiddie; Moroney lost to Hart; Clark beat Colson; Shankland lost to Smart; Harrington lost to Riggs; Forbes beat Candy; Fitzgerald lost to Gustofson; Lane all square with Dwane; Krahagen beat Fred Hill; S. Hill beat Aplin; Jackson lost to Callender; Bond beat Tankersley; E. T. Beaven beat Harry. During the weekend a match for the Hill and Hughes Buttons was played between the holders Steel and Forbes and B. and F. Booth, the challengers being defeated 5 and 4. COMING OF AGE PARKVALE GATHERING. The Parkvale Hall was crowded on Saturday evening, when a twenty-first birthday function was held in honour of the coming of age of Mr Marcus Rose, son of Mrs L. A. Rose, of Parkvale. Music for the dance was sup-) plied by To Tau's Orchestra, extras being contributed by Mr Leith Hopkins and Mr Peter Fisher (bagpipes). Mr Jim Rose officiated as Master of Ceremonies. A Monte Carlo competition was won by iVlr W. H. Cardno (Wellington) and Mrs Olliver, Senr. Mr R. Andrews and Miss E. McKenzie won a lucky spot waltz. The supper room was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Mr T. Grigson said it was his most pleasant duty and honour to propose the health of the guest of the evening, Mr Marcus Rose, and in doing so he paid a tribute to him as a worthy son of worthy parents and congratulated him upon having reached his majority. The toast was responded to with musical honours. Mr Rose, in replying, thanked his mother for giving him the birthday pai’ty and also Mrs W. H. Booth of “Middle Run.” Gladstone, who so kindly made and presented the cake. (Applause). Mrs Rose’s toast was proposed by W. H. Cardno of Wellington and replied to by her son, Mr E. Rose. Mrs Rose, amid applause, presented her son with the key to the house, and lit the 21 candles on the beautiful birthday cake. Every guest received a piece of cake. After supper, everyone returned to the dance floor to enjoy more dancing. Later in the evening the numerous gift parcels were opened to display a wonderful array of presents. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the sing of "Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem. MINIATURE RIFLES . WAIRARAPA v BUSH.

Next Saturday evening the Wairarapa miniature rifle representative team (20) will fire a return match against the Bush district at Pahiatua. The Wairarapa team will be as under:—L. G. Rasmussen. M. A Carterton visitor to Palmerston North yesterday reports the weather in the northern city was very stormy and that a heavy fall of hail as large as peas covered the ground in a white mantle.
