DEFENCE RECRUITING

STRENGTH OF LOCAL UNITS. According to Captain B. Barrington, Central Military District recruiting officer, the total number of men on the rolls at Masterton of the Hawke's Bay Regiment and the Wellington-East Coast Mounted Rifles is 233. The Mounted Rifles have a present strength of 120 and there are 10 additional men in the northern part of the district who have been attested, medically examined and are parading without horses. Masterton men on the strength of the Hawke’s Bay Regiment total 113 with a further 8 awaiting medical examination.

There are 75 National Reservists now registered at the Masterton office of the Army Department.
