HOCKEY

WAIRARAPA COMPETITIONS

HASTWELL BEAT CARTERTON.

FIRST LOSS THIS SEASON

Hockey in the Wairarapa on Saturday was confined to senior and third grade matches. The junior reps were playing at Palmerston North, while all women's games were cancelled. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Carterton who went under for the first time this season to Hastwell.. The weather conditions were atrocious at Hastwell. hail and rain falling during the game, while the grounds were practically waterlogged. This was all against the Carterton team who could not handle the going and Hastwell secured an outright win by 4 goals to nil. This is Carterton’s first defeat this season and now brings Hastwell on, level terms in the championship table. With only two more games to go it looks as if Carterton and Hastwell will have to meet again to decide the championship. . On the Lansdowne grounds Kiwi proved too good for Wesley and won by 10/2. The grounds were in ideal condition. Kiwi started off well and had Wesley defending for most of the spell. Despite this, however, Wesley led at the interval by 2/1. The second spell saw a different story, for Kiwi scored nine more goals while Wesley failed to add to their total. D. Leete had a day out and scored six of the team’s goals. Results are:

Senior. Kiwi beat Wesley 10/2. Hastwell beat Carterton 4/0. Dalefield a bye.

Thirds. Carterton beat Wesley 5/1. Greytown Scouts beat College 6/2.

REPRESENTATIVE MATCH.

WAIRARAPA JUNIORS BEATEN.

A representative match between Wairarapa juniors and Manawatu juniors was played at Palmerston North on Saturday. After a very fast and exciting game Manawatu were the winners by 3/2. Both teams were evenly matched, and produced hockey of a high standard. As the play went a draw would have been a better indication of the game. For Wairarapa Gaine and Hanley (full backs) played well, especially Gaine. G. Hanley was nervous for a time but when he settled down was very solid. Jack Harrington was the best half on the ground and gave a polished display. The forwards were up against a solid set of backs but despite this played very well. Parsons, the Wairarapa goalie, played a sound game in the net.

The teams were: — . Wairarapa: Parsons, Hanley, Gaine. Forsberg, Ferguson, G. Harrington, Sale, Reeves, Harrington, looby, Faulknor. , Manawatu: Hart, Gough, Vogn. Handcock, Kyle, Proctor, Lyons, Hodson. Beale, Bennett, Waters. From the bully-off Wairarapa went straight to the attack, but found the Manawatu backs hard to pass. Play remained in midfield for a time till D. Tooby secured and made a good run. His pass to Harrington was accepted and the ball sailed into the net and Wairarapa led 1/0. Wairarapa kept up the pressure and had the Manawatu backs hard pressed. Lyons put Manawatu in a good position and passed to Hodson who shot for the net. Parson saved only to have Hodson rush in a goal from the rebound off his pads and make the score 1/1. Tooby made a nice run for Wairarapa soon after and passed to Harrington who passed back, and Faulknor, coming in fast sent in a hot shot which gave the goalie no chance and again Wairarapa led 2/1. me Manawatu forwards, using a short pass with good effect and with a nice run in which all took part, carried all before them for Bennett to goal, making Wairarapa 2, Manawatu 2 at half-time. Manawatu took the lead in the second spell when Lyons made a good run down the line and centred. The ball went to Hodson, to Beale, to Bennett, the last player sending in a beautiful shot which proved to be the winning goal. Manawatu 3, Wairarapa 2. Wairarapa set out in determined fashion to increase their score, but were too eager and several shots missed their mark. Manawatu fully tested Wairarapa’s defence in the last ten minutes of play. The Wairarapa team was hospitably entertained by the Manawatu Association after the game and returned home on Saturday night.
