PACIFIC BASES

■ UNITED STATE’S PRESSING DEVELOPMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, noon.) WASHINGTON, August 11. The Navy Department has ordered work to be started on five Pacific Island air bases, with an award of construction contracts totalling approximately 14,607,000 dollars. The bases are at Kaneohe Bay, on Oaku Island, the fleet air base at Pearl Harbour and those at Midway, Johnston and Palmyra islands. Congress authorised twelve bases last session, appropriating 65 million dollars for the purpose. The Navy’s announcement indicates that the new Pacific works will be accelerated beyond the others.
