The death has occurred of Mr James Ernest Campbell, Mayor of Hawera, aged 57 years. •Messrs Hall and Marsden, of Wellington, are among guests staying at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Masterton. A director of the Waipu Dairy Company. Whangarei. since its formation 39 years ago and chairman for the past 22 years. Mr D. H. McKenzie has retired from the directorate.

Mr and Mrs H. O. Toogood. Masterton, who have been visiting England, will return to New Zealand on the Dominion Monarch, which will arrive in Wellington on September 8. Mr J. C. Whibley, headmaster of the Taihape District High School, hqs been appointed first principal of the Palmerston North Intermediate School. Mr Whibley at one lime taught in Auckland. He will take over his new duties on February 1. It was ascertained this morning that the condition of Mr Warren Burling, the victim of the recent motor accident at Clareville, was showing an improvement. He was operated upon yesterday by Dr. Corkill. a specialist of Wellington, assisted by Dr. R. N. Campbell., of Carterton. The operation proved quite successful. Mr K. W. Harte, clerk of the Timaru Court, has been appointed registrar ol the Supreme Court and clerk of the Magistrates’ Court in Napier. At various periods Mi’ Harte was clerk ol the Court at Masterton. Balclutha. Dunedin, and Christchurch, having been in the service of the Department of Justice for 35 years. New Zealand will bo represented at the Imperial Rugby conference in London in December by Messrs G. A. Maddison (Hawke’s Bay) and A. E. McPhail (Canterbury). They were appointed as lhe outcome of a ballot held by the council of the New Zealand Rugby Union at a meeting in Wellington yesterday. The oilier candidates were Messrs J. McLeod (Tarannki» and H.
