MOTOR VEHICLES
REGISTRATIONS IN CANADA. OTTAWA. Out of a population of eleven million in Canada, registration licenses were issued for 1,394,853 motor vehicles in 1938. This was an increase of 75,151 licences or 5.7 per cent over 1937. Of this total, 1,159,604 licences were issued for passenger automobiles, 220,114 for motor trucks, 1,980 for motor buses, 12,073 for motor cycles and 1,082 for other motor vehicles including ambulances, hearses, tractors, municipal fire trucks, etc. It has been computed that there were 9.7 persons to every passenger' automobile in 1938 as compared with 10.1 in 1937 or, taking all motor vehicles into consideration, the average was 8.1 in 1938 as compared with 8.4 in 1937. Canada strictly enforces the law which provides that only competent and licensed persons can drive motor vehicles. During the year 1.471,230 persons were granted personal drivers’ licences, in addition to 352,414 chauffeurs’ licences issued. One of the features of motoring - in Canada has been the development of the use of the motor trailer, particularly those equipped as regular homes. In 1938 there were 62.971 trailers licensed as compared with 54.011 in 1937.
