RACING CLUB MEETING DATE FOR MARCH MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held last evening. Mr W. Howard Booth presided over ihe following stewards: Messers G. A. Vincent, P. Pain, L. H. Smart, J. Johnson, E. J. Matson, A. O. Abbott, R. G. Kemble, J. C. Harp, P. A. Cole and the secretary, J. B. Bairstow. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs G. Eaton and C. Reid. The Racing Conference wrote notifying that the application by the Club for an extra racing day had not been entertained; also that March 9, 1940, had been granted as the day of the annual meeting. The Racing Conference wrote in regard to emergency colours, which shall be all white; these colours to be worn by jockeys when an owner has no registered colours or his registered colours are not available. Accounts for rates and water rates were presented and passed for payment. The balance-sheet was placed before the stewards and was considered satisfactory, and after - being audited it will be submitted to members at the annual meeting to be held shortly. The chairman remarked that the position must be conisdered very satisfactory from the fact that the weather conditions last March were against racing owing to the continued dry weather and that when the meeting took place wet weather prevailed, the conditions thus being against the club.

The stewards who will retire at the annual meeting are Messrs V. L. Robinson, E. J. Matson, A. O. Abbott, W. C. Deller, J. Johnson and J. C. Harp. The question of appointing two trustees and a patron will be discussed at the annual meeting. LATE MISS E. I. STUBBS LARGE ATTENDANCE AT FUNERAL. There was a very large number of mourners present at the funeral of the late Miss Eleanor Irene Stubbs, which took place yesterday afternoon. Before the cortege moved off to the Clareville Cemetery a service was held in St. Mark's Anglican Church, by the Rev. W. F. Stent, Vicar. The church was crowded with a very sympathetic congregation, thus showing the esteem in which the deceased was held by the people of the town and district. The service was a very impressive .one. After the • service the pallbearers. Messrs M. Worsfold. R. Hawker, C. C. Deller, D. Irwin. R. Brown, and A. Matheson, carried the casket from the church to the hearse waiting in the church yard, and after the large number of wreaths had been conveyed to cars the cortege over a mile in length wended its wav to the Clareville Cemetery, where the Rev. W. F. Stent conducted the burial service. Members of the Carterton Ladies’ Hockey Club were present at the graveside. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved mother and the other members of the family in their sad bereavement, and many telegrams, cards and letters have been received. RETURN SOCIAL ENJOYABLE GATHERING AT MATARAWA. Last night in the Matarawa School house one of the most enjoyable social events recorded in the district was held when the wives and daughters were entertained by the husbands of the Dalefield-Matarawa districts in return for a social recently given in honour of the husbands in the Dalefield hall. The ladies were delighted with the arrangements made in their honour and stated that the husbands certainly know how to entertain. The first part of the evening was taken up with card playing, the prizes being won as follow: Ladies, Mrs W. Ticehurst 1, Mrs R. Gallon 2. Men, Mr Lon Parker 1, Mr C. Abbott 2. At the conclusion of the card tournament a very savoury supper was served by the husbands, the tables being beautifully decorated with Iceland poppies. After supper the tables were cleared away. Several amusing competitions were held. A musical number was won by Miss J. Knowles, "Old Photographs” by Mrs R. Gallon and “Sending Telegrams” by Miss J. Knowles. Dancing was then indulged in and enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs V. J. Ashton. Mrs Hughes, H. Bain and Mr Len Parker (ac■"Yordion). A statue waltz was won by Miss J. Knowles and Mrs Hughes, and the Monte Carlo' went to Mrs M. J. Parker and Miss Lola Parker. In between. the dancing community singing was indulged in and Mr Gao Sadler delighted with a recitation. At the conclusion of the evening Mrs Ross Gallon, on behalf of the ladies, thanked the husbands for the splendid gathering provided in their honour and said that she had no hesitation in saying that the "hubbies" knew their job. She believed that they were the first lot of husbands to entertain the ladies in such a delightful manner. Mr M. J. Parker acknowledged Mrs Gallon’s complimentary remarks and thanked her on behalf of the husbands. The gathering was brought to a close with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." It was certainly a gathering that will long be remembered by those who were present and it was certainly one of the most outstanding gatherings ever recorded in Carterton district. Personal. Mrs C. Gallon, of Woodville is on a visit to Carterton. Mr J. J. Hadley is still confined to his bed with a heavy cold, but is improving. Mr E. McKenzie left yesterday afternoon for Auckland, where with Messrs Lucas and French he will watch Rugby games with a view to selecting the North Island Minor
