GOVERNMENT AND PRIVATE OPERATORS. DEMAND FOR LEVEL TERMS OF COMPETITION. (By Telegraph--Press Association.) DUNEDIN. August 10. A protest against what he described as unfair competition between railway road services and privately owned transport companies was made at the quarterly meeting today of the Otagc Provincial Council of the New Zealand Farmers' Union by Mr James Begg. The new increase in petrol taxatioi weighted the scales still furthei against private enterprise, as petrol used by the Government service was tax-free, he said. The following motion was carried:— “That where the Government services are in competition with private enterprise they should be debited with petrol taxation, so that the position may be made clear to the public.” “People see that railway road services are doing well, and say that they can do the job better than struggling private companies." Mr Begg explained.
