WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
MEETING AT CARTERTON
(“Timos-Arc" Special.)
A meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute was held yesterday afternoon when Mr H. Knutson (president) presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Ode and Aspiration followed by the Institute song and the prayer for peace. Correspondence was read from th;-. New Zealand Institute for the Blind, asking that the Institute undertake the organisation of a concert to be given on October 18 by the brass band from the Institute for the Blind. After discussion, it was decided to do so with the help of other Institutes and organisations. The Institute for the Blind also requested that a sale of basketware be held at the Carterton Show on October 25 and 26. This was agreed to.
An invitation was extended to the president, secretary and members to attend the fifth birthday of the Gladstone Women's Institute on Thursday. August 17. The director of Massey College wrote drawing attention to the Home Makers course to be held at the College in October and asking that applications from those wishing to take the course bo forwarded as soon as possible. The treasurer of the Wairarapa Federation thanked the members for the generous donation to the Federation funds. The president gave a short address on the contents of the annual report of the Dominion Federation, drawing attention to the fact that there are 31 000 members of "Institutes in New Zealand. The competitions resulted as follows:—Marmalade: Mrs A. C. Knutson 1. Mrs A. T. Hawke 2. Mrs C. Porter 3. Ginger cake: Mrs W. P. Williams 1, Mrs Ovens 2, Mrs A. T. Hawke 3. Mrs J. Standen judged the competitions and was presented with a shoulder spray. The newly formed Glee Circle entertained with a glee which was heartily applauded. Mr R. Griffiths gave an interesting demonstration on the uses of a sewing machine and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The meeting terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
PARKVALE INSTITUTE.
PRESENTATION TO MRS JOHNSON
The monthly meeting of members of the Parkvale Women's Institute was largely attended, Mrs N. Peacock presiding. The Institute’s new banner was on display and was very favourably commented upon by members. An invitation was received from the Gladstone Women's Institute to attend their birthday gathering on Thursday next and a number of members wore appointed to represent the Institute. During the afternoon Mrs N. Peacock, on behalf of members, in well chosen words presented a beautiful handbag to Mrs M. Johnson, who will shortly leave the district. Eulogistic reference was made to the excellent services rendered by Mrs Johnson. Mrs Johnson after thanking members for their kindness was accorded musical honours and presented with a shoulder spray.
An interesting travel talk was given by Mrs Neil McLaren, of Masterton. on her recent trip to England, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray.
Two new candidates for membership, Mrs L. Johnson and Mrs W. Renall, were proposed.
Mrs J. A. Roberts was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the donation of a sack of potatoes for the potato growing competition; as also was Mrs W. George for the gift of a pen painted cushion to be competed for to raise funds for the Institute. A table to be used at Institute meetings was the gift of Mrs T. King, and a vote of thanks was accorded her.
Mrs L. Rayner delighted those‘present by the singing of two songs, “Little Sir Echo” and "Little Old Lady.’ A competition arranged by Mrs J. Rayner was won by Mrs B. Renall. The roll call for the afternoon, suggestions for comfort, brought forth some excellent ideas.
The results of the monthly competitions were as follow: —Seniors: Baby's knitted singlet (to be sent to Salvation Army Home, Wellington), Mi's B. Renall. 1; Mrs L. Rayner, 2; Mrs W. Adlam. 3. Best polyanthus: Mrs L. Rayner. 1; Mi's J. Rayner, 2; Mrs H. Deller, 3. Juniors: Cocoanut ice. Miss H. McKinnon, 1: Miss J. Warrington, 2: Miss E. Brasell, 3. Best polyanthus, Miss J. Warrington, 1; Miss H. McKinnon. 2; Miss E. Brasell, 3. The hostesses for the afternoon wore Mesdamcs E. McGarvie, McKenzie, C. Jensen and B. Renall. KOPUARANGA GATHERING. COMPETITION WINNERS. The monthly meeting of the Kopuaranga Women's Institute was held in the hall yesterday afternoon Mrs Wright presiding over a fair attendance of members. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames W. J. Cottle and R. Moon. A report from the Dominion Federation was read. A vote of sympathy was passed tc Mrs W. J. Cottle in the loss of hei father. Mr H. Daken. fi'he president welcomed a new member. Mrs C. C. Jackson, who is tv give an address at the Septembei meeting. The roll call, "Kitchen Don’ts." was answered by all present. A successful "bring and buy" stall was held during the afternoon. Mrs E. J. Wright gave an interesting demonstration on re-covering shoes. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. Mesdames W. Reside and C Jarrett.
