CARTERTON

PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH LADIES' GUILD SOCIAL. (‘•Times-Age” Special.) A very pleasant afternoon organised by the Presbyterian Ladies' Guild was held in St. Andrew's Hall on Wednesday. Much appreciated vocal -solos were contributed by Mrs V. L. Robinson "O' Promise Me" and "Mighty Like a Rose." while Miss A. Sorensen entertained with pianoforte solos, which were thoroughly enjoyed. Mrs J. Fisher was in charge of a stall containing hand-knitted garments, and the sale of woollies has considerably augmented the guild funds. Two competitions were held, the prizes going to Mrs J. Johnston and Miss J. Anderson respectively. Afternoon tea was provided by members of the guild.

FOOTBALL CONTEST

AT AN INTERESTING STAGE.

Much interest will be evinced in football games in the Wairarapa senior championship tomorrow. The points scored by the teams at present ,is as follows: Carterton 14 points, Gladstone 13 points, Old Boys 12 points, Greytown 7 points, Red star 4 points, Masterton 4 points. .If Carterton defeat Greytown (and it is always a hard game at Greytown) their position will be assured. On the other hand if Carterton is defeated and Gladstone win against Old Boys, Gladstone will be one point up, but if Old Boys are successful and Carterton lose. Carterton and Old Boys will be equal with 14 points with Gladstone one point down. The other teams, whatever happens, cannot gain the championship. An exciting finish to the championship is assured.

The Carterton seniors to play Greytown at Greytown on Saturday will be: Harp, Brown, Thompson, Loader, Holmes, Fitzgerald, Lipinski. Smith, Rasmussen, Matheson, Trass, Crawley, Taucher. Walker, Alexander. The Carterton juniors to play Martinborough at Carterton for the Pearson Cup will be Olliver, Moorcock. Blake, McPhee, Geange, Corlett, Blake, Walker, Warrington, King. Deller, Leniban. Referee: W. Spooner. The Carterton third grade team to play College at 1.30 p.m. will be as follows: Braggins, McGuinness (2), Hurndell (2), Johnston. Catt, Spooner, Corlett Desmond, Geange (2), McPherson, Morris. J. Burt. Referee, J. Johnston.

The Carterton fourths to play College on Saturday al Carterton at 1.30 p.m. will be picked from the following: Sunkel. Goodin (2). Gain. Beere, Henderson. Haste. Ireland, McKenzie. McLean, Davidson. King. Morris, Waring, Sewell Udy. The referee will be the Rev H. White.

BOY SCOUTS WEEKLY CARD PARTY. The weekly card party held in aid of the Boy Scouts funds in St. Mary's Hall on Wednesday night, was well attended. The ladies’ prizes were won by Mrs Edwards fl) and Mrs W. Ticehurst <2). The men’s prizes wont to Mr P. Hodder (1) and Mrs K. Hodder (2). The lucky prizes were won by Mrs W. Williams and Mr A. Moorcock respectively. Supper was afterwards handed round. Funeral of, Mr J. Hadley. There was a very large gathering of mourners at the funeral of the late Mr Jack Hadley which took place at the Clareville Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The respect in which deceased was held was shown by the fact that there was quite a mile of motor cars following the hearse. Many beautiful wreaths were sent and were taken to the cemetery in two motor cars. At the graveside the burial service was conducted by the Rev W. F. Stent, Vicar of St Marks Anglican Church and the Funeral ritual of the Totara Lodge of Druids was read by Bro Alex Stretton. District President. The pall-bearers were Messrs J. Spicer, C. K. Goodin and S. Heginbotham (of Mr C. K. Goodin's establishment where deceased was employed) and Bros D. Gayfer. G. Crothers and I. Bond, members of the Druids Lodge. Mr J. J. Hadley, his father, was unable to attend the funeral being confined to his bed. Dozens of telegrams of sympathy, letters and cards were received by deceased's father. Personal Items. Mr J. A. B. Lawrence is spending a holiday in Rotorua. Church Service. I A Church of England service will be held at Gladstone at 11 a.m. on Sunday and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. The Rev. W. F. Stent will conduct the services. Mr Colin Sherrill', of Wellington, will be the preacher at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Sunday and at West Taratahi in the afternoon. Arrangements have been made for the Rev. W. J. Couling. of Geraldine, to preach on' the following Sunday. It is understood that Mr Couling will receive a call in due course, if suitable. Hockey Team. The Carterton hockey team to play Hastwclls at Hastwells will be: —A. Ward. S. Fisher. A. Harp. D. Irwin. M. Worsfold. I. Mackie. V. Sayer. A. Fisher. D. Jackson. B. Roberts. J. Steel. Cars will leave the Post Office at 1.30 p.m. Heavy Fresh in Rivers. The warm rain that has fallen intermittently during the oast two days has been the means of dislodging a considerable amount of snow from the ranges, and consequently the rivers and small streams have been running full. The Waiohine River was very high yesterday. The M.mngatereu flooded its banks near the Waiohine Bridge, with the result that Swamp Road was covered to a fair depth. Today the water is receding.
