The non-playing American leader, Walter Pate, has selected the following seven players from whom four will be chosen to defend the Davis Cup: Riggs, Parker. McNeill. Grant. Wood. Cooke and Mako. Concerning the exact composition of the team Pate said: “I do not intend to make an announcement till the last minute. Keep the Australians guessing is our motto.” The tennis editor of the New York “Daily News" says: “As the doubles situation stands now it looks like either a McNeill and Parker or Riggs and Cooke combination.” AUSTRALIA v CUBA. SINGLES TO BROMWICH AND QUIST. (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) SEABRIGHT, August 10. In the Davis Cup zone final against Cuba, Bromwich (Australia) defeated Aguero (Cuba) 8/6, 6/0, 6/2. Quist defeated Morales 6/0, 6/2, 6/2. Aguero was at set point in the first set, although Bromwich had achieved a 4/3 lead. The Cuban drew the Australian to the net and passed him frequently, but Bromwich, who opened lazily, soon had things well in hand, particularly after he had staved off his opponent at the latter’s set point. He then quickly ran out the set and concluded the' match with even less ado. Bromwich, speaking to the Australian Associated Press correspondent, said: "I had no confidence in my strokes because I have not had any real competition since leaving Australia. I did not know what to do when 1 got out on the court.” " It is reported that the Japanese tennis authorities are anxious to have one or two members of the Australian team play in Japan on their way home. Although Quist was physically under par he had little trouble In eliminating Cuban's number 1. Quist elected to run as little as possible and Morales obliged him by trying the baseline game at which he was hardly capable of holding his own. Quist tired toward the end of the match, but it was a walkover contest lasting twenty-nine minutes. Quist's baseline game was very accurate but it is evident he will need some good practice in the next fevj, weeks.
