POLITICIANS AT ODDS
AN ANGRY GOVERNMENT MEMBER. WITHDRAWAL OF TERM ORDERED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. An allegation by one member that another member of the House had displayed '‘unmitigated snobbery" in a reference to him led to the intervention of the Speaker. Mr Barnard, during the debate on the Financial Statement in the House of Representatives last evening.' Mr W. M. C. Denham (Government, Invercargill.) claimed that Mr J. Hargest (Opposition. Awarua) had said that he (Mr Denham? was of no importance. "The colossal cheek, the unmitigated snobbery." Mr Denham said. Mr Speaker: "Order, order. The hon member must withdraw." Mr Denham: "I am sorry, sir. I am only withdrawing the term because you ask mo to.” Mr Denham added that he would describe the statement made about him as unmitigated effrontery. By means of interest-free money, said Mr Denham, the Dominion could increase its . export production and build up its overseas credits in London. By means of a State operated money service it could establish an infernal economy that could produce an abundance and distribute an abundance irrespective of what the overseas wolves allowed the Dominion for its produce. "New Zealand is fighting an heroic battle, and I am confident that if we have the goodwill of the people we will win out.” Mr Denham said. "There is no need to cut the standard of living in this country because the financiers say we should do so.”
