CHILLED BEEF
RAPID DEVELOPMENT MADE IN NEW ZEALAND. IMPROVEMENT IN QUALITY DESIRABLE. The rapid development of the chilled beef industry which only commenced in New Zealand in the 1933-34 season was referred to by the president of the Masterton A. and P. Association. Mr P. R. Welch, at yesterday’s annual meeting of the association. Mr Welch stressed the necessity of making plenty of provision at the forthcoming show for this section. "Since the 1933-34 season the New Zealand shipments of chilled, beef to the United Kingdom have increased from 19,576 quarters to 192,938 as at May 31 for the 1938-39 season. It is anticipated that the total shipments for this season will reach the figure of 280.000 quarters. The f.o.b. value of chilled beef exported from New Zealand according to official statistics for the 12 months ended March 31, 1939. was .£708,069," said Mr Welch. “Now that our export of chilled beef has become such an important part of our meat trade, and also having regard to its further great potentialities, the Meat Board again stresses to farmers the importance of continued efforts being made to still further improve the quality of the chiller cattle they are breeding. Improved breeding, and well finished cattle, together with more regular monthly supplies will greatly assist in developing this trade along the right lines. We should do our utmost to encourage this section of the show.” he said.
