TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE “That Naturally Crooked Individual” WHO ALWAYS SEES NON-TRIER IF HIS HORSE LOSES IMPORTANT CLASH THAT DID NOT MATERIALISE (BY “CARBINE.”) Every person has his pet aversions and one of “Carbine's” is that individual who sees a non-trier in every horse that fails when his money is on it. In most cases he never has more than five shillings on with the bookies, anyway. This person is naturally of a crooked twist himself; he considers that everyone else should do just whdt he would like to do, and, in the case of a short-priced horse imagines he sees the jockey doing all sorts of things—such as losing ground through allegedly getting on to the heels of other horses, running into pockets, covering more ground than is necessary and a host of other matters which “Carbine’’ does not propose wasting valuable space on.

“Carbine” has often wondered if this “know-all” has ever realised that a jockey cannot pick his position throughout the entire race. Possessed of the superficial knowledge that is dangerous in everything, he will make all sorts of allegations, and it is indeed a great pity that his ideas occasionally find their way into the racing columns of newspapers.
