At the end of last week he was suffering from a cold, but despite this continued his usual duties, and was about town in his car on Monday afternoon. He retired to rest on Monday evening in his usual spirits except for his cold. During the early hours of Tuesday morning he went to his father’s room and complained of feeling very i 11,.; Mr Hadley Senr.. who himself had been confined to his bed with a heavy cold, went to a neighbouring telephone and called Dr. Campbell, who, upon arrival took the patient to the Croydon Hospital. Despite skilled medical attention and nursing he died at 10.45 o'clock. The deceased was engaged to be married shortly, preparations for the event being in hand. He was a keen salesman, and his death will come as’ a great shock to all who knew him. He was a member of Totara Lodge of Druids. Deep sympathy will be felt for Mr Hadley in his bereavement. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving Mr Hadley's residence, Lincoln Road, Carterton, at 1.30 p.m. for the Clareville Cemetery. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the- Carterton School Committee there were present: Messrs H. J. McKenzie (chairman), P. Beere, G. Rabbits, J. Stevens, C. Clarke. J. Finn (treasurer), W. E. Knowles (secretary), and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. King and C. K. Goodin. The financial statement showed a credit balance of £ll6 2s 9d. Accounts amounting to £47 10s 9d were passed for payment.

The headmaster reported that the primary roil stood at 370 and the secondary at 52. The attendance had been affected by sickness and bad weather. No arrangements had been made for Arbor Day, but Mr Martin suggested that native shrubs should be procured and planted in the school surrounds, this was agreed to, and the procuring of the shrubs was left to Mr Martin and the treasurer, Mr J. Finn.

The necessity for a telephone at the school was stressed by Mr Martin. In eases of accident and in the course of arranging games and functions a great deal of valuable time could be saved. It was mentioned that the general fund could not be utilised for the purpose, but there was a credit balance in the special account from which the cost could be defrayed. The matter is to be discussed with officers of the P. and T. Department.

In the past the school fires have not been lighted until school assembled, and the headmaster pointed out that the rooms ,were very cold until late in the morning. The janitor is to be engaged to light the fires at least half-an-hour before classes commence. The chairman reported that the Education Board members for the district hud visited the school during the month and had inspected the school residence. which it is understood, is in such a bad state of disrepair that the headmaster prefers to rent a private house. The matter of renovations is to ,bc placed before the Board. In connection with the repair of the school the Board advised that the matter had been placed before the Department and that the urgent nature of the work had been stressed. y

In connction with the repair of the old wooden fence at the south school. Mr McKenzie reported that the committee had agreed to find the labour if the Board would provide the necessary materials for repair work. This the Board members considered was a very reasonable proposal and the work would no doubt be put in hand shortly.

Authority was given to the committee to commence the work of installing two fireplaces at the side school. Tenders had been called for the work, but as the prices were higher than the allotted sum the tender;.’, had to be referred to the Board.

GOVERNMENT COTTAGES

MORE TO BE ERECTED. Further Government cottages are to be erected at South Carterton, in the vicinity of the two already occupied. The work of laying the foundations will be commenced this week. DAIRY SEASON OPENED WEEK EARLIER THAN USUAL. The Dalefield Co-operative Dairy factory opened its season this morning. During the past fortnight cows have come to profit in the district in large numbers with (he result that it was found necessary to commence operations a week earlier than usual. The amount of milk received this morning was 800 gallons. Last year it was 1200 gallons a week later, which means the total is equivalent to last year’s opening day. The Parkvale Dairy factory commenced operations yesterday with between 400 and 500 gallons of milk which is well up to the average of past seasons. Personal.
