MODEL AERO CLUB
GATHERING AT TE ORE ORE.
SUCCESSFUL GAS MODEL FLIGHTS.
The Masterton Model Aero Club held a “flying day" yesterday on the Polo Grounds, Te Ore Ore. The weather was ideal for model flying, with bright sunshine and a light northerly breeze. There were five gas models, five rubber powered models and one sailplane, on the field, all of which flew very consistently. The gas model consistency event was the main competition throughout lhe day. there being 53 flights recorded. W. G. Perry’s “Flying Quaker” gas model had several arguments with fences in landing but managed to come out of those undamaged. This machine flow very consistently throughout the day, and recorded 23 flights in the consistency event. The two best times recorded by this machine on a 45 and 35 seconds motor run wore 1 min 54 secs and 1 min 35 secs, respectively. The Club's Loutrel Special “Big Boy.” flown by W. R. Perry also flew very consistently recording 20 flights in the consistency event. The two best times recorded on an unlimited motorrun were 7 min 52 secs and 2 mins 15 secs. Later in the afternoon, however, this machine was grounded owing to a broken fuel line.
L. Tozer had bad luck when his Curtiss Robin hit a fence on landing, damaging the right wing considerably. The time was 4min 44 4-5 sees on an unlimited motor run. 11. P. Blatchford had serious motor trouble in the afternoon, but managed to secure three flights in the consistency event, while A. Rowe experienced difficulty in adjusting his gas model, “Little Sebastian.” However, this machine later turned in some fine flights on an unlimited motor run. The times were 4mins, 4 mins 33 secs and 6 mins.
A rather unique incident occurred during the afternoon in connection with the gas models of Alan Rowe and W. Perry. The latter launched “Big Boy” on one of its usual consistent flights and 4 minutes later it landed in a ploughed field coming to rest on its back. Alan Rowe launched Little Sebastian a minute or so later, and this machine landed in the same ploughed field, coming to rest on its back also wing tip to wing tip with W. Perry’s machine, with both noses facing in the same direction. Neither machine was damaged.
11. Fulton flew his new Moffett Class Rubber Powered fuselage model on numerous tests together with his ever reliable Sail plane. The Moffett showed signs of being a future contest winner in this particular class. The Sailplane unfortunately came in contect with a post and damaged the wing after a 2 min flight, thus putting it out; of commission for the rest of the day. Messrs Graeme Lyttle, Albon Carmine and Bruce Matthews flew their Redbird Junior fuselage models very successfully, these machines putting up some very consistent flights. Flights recorded in the consistency event were as follow:—W. G. Perrv. 23; W. R. Perry. 20; A. Rowe. 6; H. P. Blatchford. 3; L. Tozer. 1.
