WIFE’S EVIDENCE

VICTIM OF SAVAGE ASSAULT. HUSBAND PLEADS GUILTY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DARGAVILLE, August 5. Evidence that her husband had said to her, "I am going to kill you. before striking her on the head with a batten, and that he then ran to the wood-pile and picked up an axe. with which he again struck her. was given in the Dargaville Magistrates’ Court by Beryl Hazel Winters, aged 41. during the Lower Court hearing against her husband, Harold Heawa Winters, who faced a charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.

The woman was the victim of an assault which took place at Te Kopuru on the morning of July 1. She was admitted to the Northern Wairoa Hospital at Te Kopuru. with severe gashes to her head. Messrs A. C. Paul and G. 11. Wansborne. J.’sP.. were on the Bench. Exhibits produced in Court by Sergeant F. Culotty, who conducted the police examination, were a bloodstained axe. a batten similar to a club, and a bloodstained shirt, cardigan and one shoe.

Winters showed a nervous attitude throughout the hearing, which lasted about three hours, being completely restless. Mrs Winters showed signs of distress, breaking down on one occasion. She was assisted to the witnessbox before giving her evidence.
