FEATHERSTON
DISPLAY OF HANDWORK BY LOCAL SCHOOLCHILDREN. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the invitation of the headmaster a number of parents visited the Town Hall yesterday afternoon to view a display of handwork by the children of the school. A particularly interesting exhibit was that of a tartan skirt, woven in the looms, which was the subject of much appreciative comment. Altogether the exhibits were highly creditable to the young scholars. The parents of pupils of the Kahutara school were also present. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by the Home and School Association.
Among the displays were the following: Frame work and paddle of canoe, beaten copper work, woodwork, papier mache. raffia wing, canvas work, paper models, basketwork. There was also on view a splendid collection of New Zealand woods. FAREWELL GATHERING PRESENTATION TO MR C. WILTON. I At the conclusion of work last evening the staff of the Post Office met to bid farewell to Mr Clarence Wilton of the line staff, who has been transferred to Wellington. Mr Davis, Postmaster, in a few well chosen words, asked Mr Wilton to accept a fountain pen as a small token of the esteem of the members of the staff. Supervisor J. Holland and Lineforeman J. Anderson also added a few words. Mr Wilton suitably replied. SILVER WEDDING < MR & MRS J. BLAIN. A number of friends paid a surprise visit to Mrs J. Blain on Thursday afternoon, the occasion being the silver wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Blain. During the afternoon a presentation was made to Mrs Blain accompanied by best wishes for the future health and prosperity of Mr and Mrs Blain. RACING CLUB MEETING OF STEWARDS. At the monthly meeting of the stewards of the Wairarapa Racing Club there were present —Messrs J. W. Card (chairman), A. C. Pearce, T. Benton. D H. S. Riddiford, J. F. Thompson, W. Howard Booth, R. N. Barton, J. G. Donald, H. Lawson, R. A- Donald, C. J. Nix, N. C. C. Shepherd (secretary). An apology for absence was received from Mr Roy Donald. The receipts since the last meeting totalled £2 14s 2d. Accounts amounting to £99 7s were passed for payment.
Mr D. C. Collins wrote resigning as a steward. The Nev/ Zealand Racing Conference wrote advising the club that its application for two more days of racing for the coming season could not be granted, as no spare days of racing are available for allocation.
The N.Z. Army Service Corps wrote applying for the use of the racecourse for a week's bivouac on September 2 and 3 and September 30 and 1.. Permission was granted. The chairman reported that the architect engaged to inspect and report on the buildings would shortly supply his report. Mr J. G. Donald was appointed to the sub-committee to meet the architect in place of Mr Roy Donald. Mr C. J. Nix, chairman of the Course Committee, reported that the matter of drainage had been gone into further, and the committee recommended that the original suggestion of carrying the drain from the lawn entrance gate to the gully be gone on with. The recommendation was adopted. A resolution expressing sympathy with Mr Roy Donald in his illness, and wishing him a speedy recovery, was passed. SCHOOL GAMES HONOURS EVEN.
Two teams from the Kahutara school visited Featherston yesterday afternoon to play basketball and football with local teams. In basketball Kahutara won by 22 to 9, and at football Featherston were successful by 6 to nil.
