HOSPITAL COSTS
PROPOSAL TO DISCONTINUE RATING. ißy Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON. August 4. A proposal that the county council discontinue to levy rates for the upkeep of the Ashburton Public Hospital, in view of social security legislation was placed before members today. .After a long discussion, in which all aspects of the matter were reviewed, it was decided that it would be unwise for the council itself to take any direct action. The motion was withdrawn in favour of the following:— "That, with the adoption of the social security scheme, the council expresses great concern and protests at the continuance of levies on local bodies for the upkeep of hospitals, since duplication is brought about by the social security tax: the council requests the Government to finance upkeep from social security funds and must seriously consider cessation of its contribution of the levy."
