STATE THEATRE

BOBBY BREEN AT HIS BEST. The large audience at the State Theatre last night were captivated by two things—the magnificent singing of Bobby Breen and the brilliance of the picture in which he appeared, “Fisherman's Wharf.” Bobby Breen sang better than he has ever done before and his acting stamped him as an outstanding boy actor. The picture can be thoroughly recommended and no patron of the talkies can afford to miss seeing it, that is if the best that is to be found in pictures is desired. A dramatic story of a great father-and-son fellowship, through which is stitched fine threads of comedy and romance is Bobby Breen’s new starring film, “Fisherman's Wharf.” For the first time in his career, Bobby has an opportunity to play a rough, tough, thoroughly all-American youngster, as adept with his fists as he is with his voice. With a seal as his pet, and a melting-pot gang of Chinese, Italian and American youngsters as playmates, the singing star has ample opportunity to demonstrate his boyish qualities. The plot concerns Bobby’s efforts to stick by his father in spite of the intrusion into the household of an aunt and cousin who do their best to wreck the father’s palship for his adopted son. “Slicker,” the famous screen seal, reputed the most valuable animal performer in Hollywood, plays an important part in the unfolding of the plot. As Bobby's constant companion, the seal was paid al record high salary for mammal screen performers! Unusually strong is the cast of “Fisherman’s Wharf,” with Leo Carrillo as Bobby’s father, Henry Armetta as Bobby’s close friend, Lee Patrick, Tommy Bupp, Rosina Galli and others. Henry Armetta’s glorious voice enriches this most unique comedy drama, and this popular actor shares honours with Bobby Breen in making the picture an outstanding one. There will be a strong supporting programme including a Walt Disney colour gem, “Donald’s Golf Games.”
