OBITUARY
DR. JOHN EWART. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The death has occurred of Dr. John Ewart, a former superintendent of tin Wellington Hospital. The late Dr. Ewart, M.D.. Ch. M.. was born in Scotland in 1860 and came to New Zealand in 1887. He studied i'oi a doctor at Edinburgh University gaining his M. 8., Ch.M. degree in 1880 and passing the M.D. degree with distinction in 1885. On arrival in New Zealand he was appointed medical superintendent of the Thnaru hospital, ano in 1889 took charge of the Wellington hospital until 1909 when he retired acting for some years as consulting surgeon. He rendered excellent service in the Wellington hospital as its medical superintendent and some years ago a ward called the Ewart Ward was established at the hospital as a mark of appreciation. He was married in 1889 to Miss Grace Brandon, daughter of Mr Richard Brandon. His wife predeceased him some years ago and he leaves a son and two daughters. For some year; he had not. been in the best ol health and had been blind. The late Dr. Ewart was looked upon as one of the most able medical men in the Dominion and a particularly clever surgeon. He took a keen interest in various branches of sport, especially bowls, in which he won several championships. MR W. H. CRAWFORD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANGAREI. August 4. Mr H. W. Crawford. Managing Director of the Northern Publishing Company. expired without warning at 8 o’clock this morning. He was born al Maungakaramea 57 years ago. He was a school teacher for 20 years and was the first assistant at the Whangarei Primary School when he bought a controlling interest in the Publishing Company. Mr Crawford was one of the best known publicmen in the Northland.
