JAPAN FORCED INTO IT ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL. BRITAIN.& UNITED STATES ACTING IN CONCERT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. TOKIO, August 4. A high Government official declared that the British resistance to the currency issue in China and President Roosevelt’s abrogation of the commercial treaty were forcing Japan into a military alliance with Italy and Germany which might be concluded at any moment. The., official added that Britain and America were obviously acting in concert in the Far East, whether the Governments were actually conferring or not. "We have been confidentially informed,” he added, “that Washington fears a war in Europe in September for which reason the treaty was abrogated on the spur of the moment in order to clear the way for military assistance to Britain and France, simultaneously withholding supplies from Japan. The British attitude in the Tokio negotiations changed within ten minutes of the news of the abrogation.” A crowd of 25 000 demonstrated outside the British Embassy. carrying banners inscribed "Down with Britain.” A deputation delivered antiBritish resolutions.
