Dr F. J. Gwynne, Auckland, has been awarded a doctorate of medicine by the University of New Zealand.
Mr J. T. Kirk-Burnnand, of Wellington. is on a visit to Masterton and is staying at the Hotel Midland. Mr S. Mills, B. Agr., a master of Wairarapa College, has received word of his promotion to an A grade position at the Hawera Technical High School.
Mr W. H. Cocker, son of Mrs J. Cocker of Masterton, was re-elected president and Mr A. H. Johnstone, K.C., vice-president of Auckland University College at a meeting of the college council. The Leader of the British Labour Party, Mr C. R. Attlee, on Wednesday attended a meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party for the first time since his illness, a cablegram reports.
Mr A. Campbell Pearce, chairman of the Wairarapa Power Board, was also in attendance yesterday when several members of the board and officers inspected the route, etc., of the extension work to be carried out in the Masterton area.
Mr Winston Jones, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Jones, of Renall Street, Masterton. who is engaged in aviation in Auckland, has passed his examination as a leading aircraftsman 'and has received promotion. Mr Jones, who is 19 years of age, and takes a keen interest in aviation, is the youngest member to pass the examination, and is to be congratulated on his success.
The death occurred in Napier of Mrs Sarah Leach Dean, widow of the late Rev Oliver Dean, who for many years was in charge of St Andrew’s Church, Port Ahuriri. Mrs Dean was born in Napier, and was the elder daughter of Mr R. Holt. She leaves three daughters—Mrs H. R. Bisley, Napier, and Misses Mona and Winifred Dean, Palmerston North and Napier respectively —and one son. Dr K. Dean. Palmerston North.
Mr J. Robertson, member for Masterton. was elected yesterday as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives—a position which had been occupied for some time past by the late Mr E. J. Howard. Mr Robertson was a member of the Public Accounts Committee in his first term in Parliament. 1911 to 1914. and has also served since his return to the House in 1935. on the committee of which he now becomes chairman.
Mr Patrick Hanlon, of Raumai. Ashhurst, died recently in Napier, at the age of 80 years. He was born in Riverstown. County Louth. Ireland, and emigrated at the age of 19, landing at Wellington from the sailing ship Rakia after a journey of three months. Mr Hanlon took up land in the Pohangina Valley and felled the bush on the property that he owned at the time of his death. He was one of the founders of the , AshhurstPohangina Racing Club, of which ho was president for 26 years, and a life member. He was a life member of the Ashhurst Domain Board, the Manawatu Agricultural and Pastoral Association. and the Cosmopolitan Club.
