CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MATARAWA-DALEFIELD MEETING. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Mata-rawa-Dalefield Women's Institute. Mrs Ross Gallon presided. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. Knowles and E. Hughes. Seven new members were elected, bringing the roll to the vicinity of 50. The new members are Mrs W. McPhee Mrs J. Sullivan. Misses Iris Zillwood. Joyce Neilsen. Jean, Gwen and Nancy Conwell. Invitations were received from the Solway-Manaia and the Gladstone Institutes on the occasions of their birthday celebrations. A letter written on behalf of the husbands of the district was received expressing appreciation of the recent Husbands’ Night and inviting the ladies to attend a complimentary evening to be held in the Dalefield Hall on the evening of Friday, August 11. The invitation was accepted. Mr E. H. Hawker. Carterton. gave a very interesting address on gardening at the conclusion of which he answered several questions. Mr Hawker also judged the bloom competition and he was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Mesdames A. Pink and E. Hawker judged the knitting competition, and were presented with shoulder sprays. Mrs Pink congratulated members on the very fine display and stated that the task of selecting the prizewinners was no mean one. The competitions resulted as follow: —Best bloom: Mrs M. Parker 1, Mrs E. Smith 2. Mrs S. McCarty 3. Best article made from two ounces of wool: Mi's S. McCarty 1, Mrs L. Rogers 2, Mrs I. McLaren 3.

A photograph competition resulted in a tie between Mrs Wilf Ticehurst and Mrs E. Smith. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Playle, E. G. Knowles. E. Smith and Wilf Ticehurst. Personal. Mr C. Webster, of Wellington, will be a weekend visitor to Carterton and will take the services at the local Presbyterian Church on Sunday, visiting Longbush at 2.30 o'clock in the afternoon. Arrangements are being made to fill the vacancy caused by the transfer of the Rev R. Byers to Christchurch. P. and A. Ball. The annual P. and A. Ball is to be held in the King’s Theatre, Carterton. on Monday next. Great preparations are being made for the event, the combined committees being busy, and arrangements are well in hand. Given fine weather it is anticipated that there will be a record attendance. Church Service. A. Church of England service will be held at Ponatahi on Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Rev W. F. Stent will officiate. 500 Card Tournament. The weekly 500 tournament held in the Band Room. Holloway Street, Carterton, on Tuesday, under the supervision of Mrs S. Green and Mrs N. Benge, was again well attended. The prizes were won as follows: — Ladies, Mrs Clapp 1, Mrs Banks 2. Men: Mrs Patterson (acting) 1, Mrs Edwards (acting) 2. Football Teams. The Carterton fourths to play Masterton on Saturday afternoon at Rugby Park will be picked from the fol-lowing:—-Sun kcl, Waring. Becre, Goodin (2), Davidson, Gain, Ireland. McLean. George, H. Calender. B. Parker. The North v South senior men’s hockey game will be played on Carrington Park tomorrow. Members of the Wairarapa representative hockey team have left for Wellington by cars and will fly from Rongotai to Nelson. The team will return to Wellington by air.
