TRAMPING CLUB

INFORMATIVE TALK. ON SKI-ING. FORTHCOMING CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. There was a large attendance of trampers and skiers at the Wairarapa Tramping Club’s second club night of the season, held last evening at Messrs Dunderdale and Gray’s rooms. Members were given an instructive talk on ski-ing by the president of the club, Mr J. A. Weeks, who has had considerable ski-ing and mountaineering experience in both the Ruapehu and Southern Alps regions. After explaining the various types of ski and their bindings, Mr Wells demonstrated the straight running positions used for both soft and crusted snow conditions. This was followed by an explanation of the numerous turns used in ski-ing —kick,, jump, stem, telemarke, and Christiana turns.

At the conclusion of the talk, which was followed with great interest, members had an opportunity for discussion before supper.

The demonstration was particularly interesting in view of the fact that four members of the club are leaving shortly on a ski-ing trip to Mt Ruapehu, while three are going to Mt Cook. Several members expressed their intention of competing in the annual inter-club ski championship which are being held next weekend at either Kime or Mr Holdsworth. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to the speaker of the evening.
