SHORTAGE OF POTATOES
IMPORT APPLICATIONS INVITED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. An announcement that the Government is prepared to accept applications for licences to import potatoes was made by the Acting-Minister of Marketing. Mr Lee Martin, last night. "Owing to an anticipated shortage of potatoes a complete survey of stocks in New Zealand has been made,” the Minister said. "It would seem that there are insufficient supplies to carry the Dominion over till the next season’s crop is available, and therefore the Government is prepared to accept applications for licences to import from recognised importers. "Applications are to oe made as usual to the collectors of Customs in the various ports of entry, and will be forwarded to the Internal Marketing Division for consideration. Licences may bo granted in part only, and in any case the Government will allow the importation of only such quantities as may be considered desirable in the light of the full facts. Applicants should state whether sterling funds will be required for any licences which may be issued.”
