RIVERSIDE CLUB CONTESTS COMMENT ON RECENT PLAY. SECOND QUALIFYING ROUND OF CHAMPIONSHIP. (By "Longdrivc.") On Saturday the members of the Riverside Golf Club played the second qualifying round for the club championship. The day was rather cold but many good cards were handed in. The greens, after the snow, were playing well and provided the ball was hit firmly many a long putt was sunk. The only surprise in the two rounds was the heading of the list by J. Thornton with J. Bell second, five strokes behind the leader.
C. Anderson played two even rounds and qualified twelfth in the juniors and is rather unlucky that he drew G. Murdock in the first round, and it will be very interesting to see how this player fares in the intermediate championship.
R. Baker had a real day off but it takes a good player to boat this man on match play. Last year Baker eliminated J. Bell in the championship and this year he has again drawn the same player, and the result, of this match will be watched with great interest.
The most carefree golfer on the links is J. Carruthers. On Saturday ho played to within two strokes of his handicap and these strokes were lost on the Bth as an 8 appears on his card for that hole.
C. Anderson scored a 4 on the eighth which was a good score for a junior as many a 5 is taken at this holo by the seniors.
B. Braggins is a competitor who is playing very consistently this year. A very promising young golfer is D. J. Carruthers. Although a junior last year he has been playing well and qualified sixth in the seniors.
The cold weather must have boon the downfall of G. Challis during the weekend, as previously he has boon playing consistently but on Saturday he could not handle his clubs with any accuracy.
A. Clarkson, who has not been playing much golf of late, returned a good card, enabling him to qualify in 13th place in the intermediate championship. He has drawn J. Wakelin. This should be a good match. W. Gilliland’s game has improved wonderfully over the last few weeks. He has changed his grip and says it is no trouble to hit the ball now. R. Hatch was right off his game during the last weekend. This player qualified sixth in the intermediate grade and has drawn R. Wearne. This should prove a good game as both players are on the same handicap. The winner of ...this match.-has to ...play the winner of the match between A. Carstens and W. Palamontain.
G. Murdock, who has been off his game lately, came to the fore on Saturday and qualified in 4th place in the junior section after taking a 10 at the "Donga." A player who has been improving with every round is S. Onion. He is now hitting a much longer ball off the lees and can now keep them straight. By qualifying second H. Orrell may prove a “dark horse” in the junior championship this year. ' M. A. Rawlins must have found the sandpit a bit troublesome at the 16th as an 8 appears on his card for that hole.
By playing good golf on the home journey V. C. Taylor returned a net score of 69 and qualified third in the intermediate championship. He has drawn B. L. Larsen.
