PONGAROA
R.S.A. BALL A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The fourth annual ball of the Pongaroa branch of the R.S.A. was held on Friday last. The returned men and their friends were favoured with a fine night after a week of very wintry weather. A full floor of dancets, including visitors from all parts of the surrounding counties, continued to enjoy themselves until after 3 a.m. without any apparent thinning of numbers. The recently formed Rhythm Aces provided the music and were much applauded. Extras were played by Miss J. Kent and Messrs A. P. Campbell, D. McDonald, H. Thom and G. Maranui. The hall was gay with bunting and flags of the allied forces, the walls carrying regimental colours interspersed with scrolls bearing the names of famous New Zealand engagements. Supper rejuvenated the merrymakers and the tables, decorated with early spring flowers, carried also a varied and tasty assortment of good things. During the evening the president of the Pongaroa R.S.A., Mr A. M. Theed. on behalf of the branch, thanked those present for their support and conveyed the apologies of Mr J. Robertson, member for the district. Mr C. P. Hunter, county chairman, and other members of the council for their inability to attend. Mr Theed pointed out that any funds derived from the function or any other function promoted by the local R.S.A. wore devoted to the assistance of distressed ex-service-men. many of whom, "burnt out” by their war service, were in need of what little extra help could be given them. The dancing was in charge of Mr H. Harold with Messrs J. Hales and A. M. Theed as assistants, while Messrs W. Moynihan. C. H. Souness and W. Clemens acted as doorkeepers and attendants. The kitchen and supper room were in the capable hands of Messrs A. and E. Dickson with a staff consisting of. Messrs G. Innes, G. Hart, W. Souness and S. Raleigh. A committee of ladies worked hard to ensure the success of the arrangements and their invaluable assistance is gratefully acknowledged by the returned men. Rep. Football. After a fast and exciting game Dannevirke Sub-Union defeated Puketoi by 16 points to 11 at Pongaroa yesterday. The teams were evenly matched and gave the finest display of football seen at Pongaroa for some years. With five minutes to go the score was 11 all, but a penalty try gave Danncvirkc the match.
