BOY SCOUTS

DISTRICT COMMITTEE. In spite of the severe weather conditions, the Scout groups of the district were well represented at a committee meeting held in the St Matthew’s Scout Den, Masterton. Those present were Messrs A. Campbell Pearce (in the chair), Clarke, Butler, Ross, Cook, Halpin, Ryan, Langford, Farley, Huntley, Shepherd, Lynch, Troop Leader Angus Ross, Miss McTaggart and the secretary (P. Wingfield). In December the crowning event- of the Boy Scout year, the Centennial Jamboree, takes place at Heretaunga; therefore, naturally, the business of the meeting was centred on this topic. The District Contingent’s colours will be green and gold. These are to be incorporated in a banner, troop flags, shield and scarves. The emblem, symbolic of farming, will be a Romney Marsh sheep’s head. There will be some 92 officers and boys representing this district at the >' Jamboree and these will go as a contingent comprising two troops each of 6 patrols of 6 boys, an S.M., 2 A.S.M.’s, and a Q.M. (the number of boys over go to form composite troops). The organisation of the contingent is in the capable hands of the District Scoutmaster, Mr John Halpin, of Featherston. The Lady Cubmasters’ Camp will be attended by several young ladies from the Wairarapa, the object of this camp being to draw assistance for the Jamboree staff, i.e., nurses for the subcamp. hospitals, clerks, typists, shop assistants, etc. The 1939 census figures for Scouts and Cubs show an appreciable increase on those of last year; the spirit of Scouting is as strong as ever in the Wairarapa Valley. Miss McTaggart, of Featherston, has recently been elected District Cubmaster and should, with years of Cubbing to her credit, be of valuable assistance to the movement. A resolution that each group submit an annual report and balance sheet showing assets and liabilities is. in view of the forthcoming Jamboree, important. With these the District headquarters will have a permanent record for reference, so that when the contingent is formed, allocation of camp gear will be a simple matter to decide on. 4 A final discussion on Jamboree matters will be held in Palmerston North on August 12 and 13. The Jamboree team will be present, representing the Jamboree Office. It is to be hoped that all officers concerned will be able to attend.
