HARRIER NOTES
PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS — KIATERE COMPETITORS. SOME CREDITABLE PERFORMANCES. Eight members of the Kiatere Hairier Club took part in the Provincial Championships at Silverstream last Saturday. The A team performed very creditably to fill third place out of twenty-two teams. As the club lacks any outstanding individual competitor this is a really excellent performance. R. Greeks, as usual in big races, ran very well to finish in twelfth place. As he is improving every year he should soon reach the provincial team. W. Burgess, J. Laing and W. McDonald ran solid races, and as their position, twentieth, twenty-first and twentythird show, they teamed really well. Burgess and Laing are both young and will do better in the near future. W. Burns and A. MacDonald did well though perhaps unable to show their best form. A. Addison, this year’s novice also performed creditably as an individual. It was his first appearance in a big race, and he was by no means last.
In the junior event. L. Frances, running solo, ran a great race to finish ninth. Though the club has every reason to be pleased with the performance of its representatives, there is a lesson to be learnt from the race namely, that our runners definitely lack pace over the last half-mile. Just a little more speed at the finish would have wiped out those 15 points between second and third places. More practice in finishing fast would rectify this, as the members have the stamina and grit. There are some really good boys in the club’s junior section and the prospects for the future look very bright. SATURDAY’S RACE. Saturday’s race will be in the nature of an open handicap over a 6.1-mile trail in readiness for the trophy race at Morison’s Bush on August 12. The following handicaps have been declared:—R. Greeks, W. Burgess scr, W. Burns. J. Laing, W. MacDonald 40sec, A. Addison, H. Stewart 4min, R. Scarancke 5.30, D. Nelson. 6.15. Juniors, 3£-miles open handicap: M. Doyle, N. Jacobsen. F. Sexton scr, C. Summers 1.45, S. Pickett 2.5. N. Dickel 3min, J. Hodgett, G. Laing 3.45. MASTERTON CLUB SECOND IN TEAMS' RACE. The Masterton Harrier Club’s team performed splendidly in the Provincial Championships to fill second place in the A teams’ race, with the placings 1,3, 13, 44. W. A. C. Pullai - ran a magnificent race to win with ease. . f
G. Gregory ran consistently well to finish in third place, and was unlucky not to have been second. Gregory has been selected to represent the Wellington Province in the Inter-Provin-cial championships at Havelock North, and with his team-mate Pullar, is expected to do well. < • R. N. Shaw ran his best race this season to fill thirteenth position, and showed a glimpse of his former form. Shaw ran a good hard race. R. Wyeth ran a great race in hard company, and acquitted himself well. The club is fortunate in having a track runner like Wyeth, and a lot is expected from him next season when he settles down to cross-country running. J. Wickens ran a good race to finish well up with the middle mon. The junior race was particularly interesting and although the team was not in the first three teams' aggregate, it was well up. C. J. Carle ran a good race to finish fairly well up, and showed better form than of late.
C. D. Orr and P. Greenlees ran good races. Orr did particularly well, Greenlees, although not fit, hold his own well.
Masterton was without the services of W. M. Sellar, H. Carle and C. K. Long.
Saturday’s event will be a friendly run.
