BRILLIANT SCENE

WAIRARAPA CHARITY BALL

PRESENTATION OF DEBUTANTES TO ARCHBISHOP O’SHEA. EXCELLENT DECORATIVE SCHEME Honoured by the presence of his Grace Archbishop O’Shea, the annual Wairarapa Charity Ball, which is always recognised as one of the outstanding events in the social calendar fully lived up to the high standard of its predecessors, and last evening the Municipal Hall, Masterton, was filled with dancers from ‘every part of the province.

The most attractive feature of the evening was the presentation of the debutantes to his Grace. Carried out with all due pomp and ceremony the presentation was a brilliant spectacle and will no doubt leave a vivid impression on the minds of those young ladies who are just on the threshold of society. The marshals for the procession were Messrs J. Sievers' and J. Hamill.

Many attempts have been made at balls this year to strike an original note in regard to the decorations, and there is po doubt that Mr L. Robinson succeeded admirably. The entire ballroom was suggestive of spring. The walls were covered with several different shades of Japonica. At the back of the stage a window overlooking a river had been formed. On the opposite side of the river were castles and the moon shining over them on to the river presented an unforgettable sight. This painting was the work of Mr Tapp. "On his arrival at the hall his Grace was met by the following reception committee: Messrs F. Corry, J. Jameson, J. Card, E. E. Whyte, D. E. Curry, J. Savage, L. Robinson and T. Jordan. On behalf of the people of the district, the Mayor of Masterton, Mr T. Jordan, extended a welcome to Archbishop O’Shea and took the opportunity of welcoming him back to the Dominion from his trip abroad. Mr Jordan expressed the thanks of the organisers of the charity ball for his kindness in being present for the occasion.

In reply, Archbishop O'Shea thanked Mr Jordan for his kind remarks and said that it was indeed a pleasure to take part in- such a brilliant and worthy gathering. His Grace also congratulated the debutantes on making their entry into society. The debutantes then made their bow and afterwards danced a special waltz.

The debutantes were: —Miss Eileen Rutherford, Pahiatua, white lace; Miss Norma Miller, Ohingaiti, whiter lace over satin; Miss Uioda McLeod, Featherston, ivory satin; Miss Gwendoline Saba, Featherston, embossed satin; Miss Florence Saba, Featherston, white embossed satin; Miss Norma Cole, Featherston, white net over satin; Miss Mary Greenlees, white embossed taffeta; Miss Nola Clarke, Masterton, white georgette and taffeta; Miss Mary Doyle, Masterton, white net and velvet over taffeta; Miss Isabelle Stilburn, Masterton, white taffeta; Miss Joan Gleeson, Masterton, white net over taffeta; Miss Margaret Carrig, white taffeta; Miss Moira Brady, pleated white satin. Excellent music was supplied by Udy’s Orchestra and Barnes Rhythm Boys, while Messrs B. Iveson, J. J. Hunter, W. C. Orange and J. Bradbury capably carried out the duties of M’s.C. The Matrons of Honour were Mrs D. H. S. Riddiford (Longwood, Featherston), Mrs T. Jordan (Masterton), and Mrs C. N. Stilburn (Masterton).

The supper arrangements were as usual an outstanding feature of the ball and the members of the ladies’ committee are deserving of the highest possible praise for their fine work. The committee was as follows: —Mesdames M. Syron, J. Dwyer, D. E. Curry, Carrie, Herbert, D. Hogan, Thompson, Moore, Gaynor, McPhailc, E. J. Eastwood. Mitchell, E. K. Eastwood, P. Hamill. Ryan, Connors, Brady, Miss Buckley. There is no doubt that the outstanding success of the ball was due to the organising work of the hard working secretary, Miss M. Diggins, who spared no pains to ensure the enjoyment of those present. That her work should be so ably crowned was indeed a fitting reward.
