MOTOR CARS BANNED
ACTION IN BERMUDA. A recommendation that a State coach be acquired for the new Governor of Bermuda was adopted at an unofficial meeting of members (says Router i after the House ol Assembly was prorogued recently. The doaeh would be drawn by four horses, mid would cost ,£2.000. The upkeep would cost £6OO a year.
The present Governor. LieutenantGeneral Sir Reginald Hildyard. announced his retirement seven weeks ago on account of the “difficulties of transport." A statement issued from Government House declared that he had ''found it impossible, without the use of a motor ear, to carry out properly the duties incumbent on his office."
Bermuda is nothing more than a huge coral reef, and no motor cars are allowed for fear of erosion. The only methods of transport are by horsedrawn cab or bicycle. A Bill introduced into the Bermuda Assembly recently to.provide the Governor with a motor car was not seconded. If the decision to acquire a State coach is officially adopted it will first be used by Major-General J. C. K. Bernard, whose appointment as Governor of Bermuda has been announced by the Colonial Office. He will assume office in September.
hands resting on the withers. There has been some talk about appointing trainers to teach apprentices the rudiments of riding. Apparently some trainers should also take lessons in how to ride a baby racehorse. The camera also shows per medium of the illustrated press frequent pictures of the start of a race. Not infrequently the camera shows that a too large percentage of riders do not know how to ride a horse away at the rise of the barrier. Whether this state of affairs is noted by the starter and officially reported to the stewards is unknown, but should be done. A field of horses may be in perfect line but through incapability, on the part of a rider or two or three or more apparently develops into what the far distant spectator may deem a bad start. This state of affairs exists at every meeting and should be reported by the starter or the steward usually at the post. The starter should do so in order to maintain his reputation and also the official at the post so that there will not be a repetition of the same mistakes providing that the rider can be taught.
