FIRST GRENADIER

FRENCH SOLDIER HONOURED. The anniversary of the “First Grenadier of France," La Tour d'Auvergne, killed at Oberhausen. .Tune 27. 1800. is celebrated every year at Carhaix. Finistere. where he was born. In accordance with an uninterrupted tradition, tiie Minister of Wai- on that day sends a company of infantry and a military band to honour the hero's memory. Perhaps the most curious detail in connection with the annual ceremony is that his relics, which are kept in the Town Hall of Carhaix in a reliquary, are carried before the altar of the local church and there blessed by the clergy. This is the only instance of relics of a layman receiving such veneration.

La Tour d'Auvergne refused to be anything more than a Grenadier. Every year, on the anniversary of his death, his name is called before his regiment, and the youngest soldier replies, "Dead on the field of honour.”
