BASKETBALL

B GRADE “REP” MATCH. HUTT DEFEAT WAIRARAPA. Although the majority of players in the Wairarapa B grade representatives were considerably younger than their opponents they displayed a sound knowledge of basketball in the match with Hutt Valley at Petone. The game was faster than the usual B grade pace, and both teams gave evidence of skilful coaching. When the half-time whistle sounded Wairarapa led, the score being 8/5. Shortly after the second spell commenced Hutt Valley forwards outwitted the Wairarapa defence and began to shoot steadily and successfully. The final score was 17/11 in favour of Hutt Valley, a score that was certainly no disgrace to the team of promising Wairarapa players whose splendid play brought forth favourable comment from the spectators. Mr O’Sullivan controlled the game in a thoroughly capable manner. The Hutt Valley Association entertained the local team at luncheon as well as morning and afternoon tea, and on behalf of/the Association, Mrs Baldwin (president) extended a welcome to the visitors. In the course of her remarks she conveyed to the Wairarapa Association the best wishes of Hutt Valley for success at the tournament in Invercargill this month. Beatrice Reilly, captain of the Wairarapa team, thanked Mrs Baldwin for her kindness and for the hospitality shown to the Wairarapa girls.
