BADMINTON GAMES INTERESTING DISPLAYS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Members of the Wairarapa Badminton Association’s representative team to play Wellington at Wellington on Saturday night paid a visit to the Featherston Badminton Club last night. Some interesting matches were played, and after engaging in mixed doubles with the Featherston players, exhibition games wore played. A splendid supper was served by the ladies' committee of the Featherston Club. CHESS GATHERING FOUR NEW PLAYERS. A gathering of Greytown and Featherston chess players was held at Mr Kidd’s residence on Friday evening last. This being the first meeting since the death of Captain Barcham, Mr Kidd spoke a few words on the loss to the community of one who was so highly respected. Those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to Captain Barcham. Members were pleased to see four young players attend. From general observation the older members will require to deepen their knowledge to keep pace with the younger chess players. RAINFALL RECORD THIRTY WET DAYS. The total rainfall in Featherston in July was 11.33 inches. The number of wet days was 30. No rain fell on July 10. The maximum fall was 1.23 inches on July 8. In July, 1938, 3.91 inches of rain fell, there being 26 wet days. VITAL STATISTICS FIGURES' FOR JULY, The following are the vital statistics for July:—Births 4, deaths 4, marriages 1. ST. JOHN’S CHURCH APPRECIATED IMPROVEMENTS. The new lighting system and the recently installed Everett electric organ, the only one of its kind in New Zealand, are a decided improvement to St John’s Church, and are much appreciated. Both were purchased as the result of the W. E. Bidwill bequest. A BUDGET SURPLUS LIFE IN THE ISLAND. A Featherston boy who is a member of the crew of H.M.S. Leander, which is at present on an island cruise, writing from Nukualofa, says that it is one of the few places which. can boast of a budget surplus. When a man reaches the age of 16 years he is given 3i acres of land on which to grow crops and live on. A native can live comfortably for a week after he has done a day’s work.

National Party Dance. An added attraction at the National Party dance on Wednesday was the music supplied by the Wairarapa Pipe Band which played popular airs for supper extras.
