ASTOUNDING CRIME

NOTES FORGED IN PRISON WORKSHOP BUNDLES FOUND IN CELLS. DISCOVERY IN THE ISLE OF WIGHT. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON. July 31. The police have unearthed an astounding forgery of pound notes by convicts in Parkhurst Prison, Isle of Wight. A convict employed in a studio where incoming prisoners were photographed stole a lens, plates and sensitised paper with which he forged notes in the prison workshop and smuggled them out with the assistance of a prison employee, who was not a convict. Several notes were passed in local shops. A search of the cells revealed bundles of notes.

The "Daily Mail” says that as a result of the- forgeries several warders have been suspended and convicts confined to the punishment cells. Two Home Office officials flew by plane to the prison and opened an inquiry.

All the notes hitherto found are incomplete, but completed ones may exist.
