WAIRARAPA V. BUSH SOME EXCELLENT SHOOTING. WIN FOR WAIRARAPA. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual match between theWairarapa and Bush District Miniature Rifle associations. 10-aside, was fired on the Carterton range on Saturday evening. Neither side was represented by its full strength, but nevertheless (he shooting was remarkably good. Wairarapa recorded five possibles ami six 99’s in its scorers. The Bush team registered two possibles, three 99’s and six 98's. At one stage of the match the scores were even, each having dropped 27 points. From then onward Wairarapa gradually gained the ascendancy and ran out winners'by 16 points. Later the visitors were entertained at supper, and the president of the Bush District Association, Mr Heayns, congratulated the home team upon its splendid shooting which averaged 98.1, a remarkable re suit in a 20-aside match, and thanked Wairarapa for their hospitality. He said that when the return fixture was fired at Pahiatua on Saturday, August 19. the best team would win and he hoped it would be Bush and thujs even things for the 1939 inter,'-association event (applause). Mr W. Johnson, president of the Wairarapa Association, acknowledged Mr Heayn’s good wishes and expressed the wish that when th? return fixture was fired the same friendly comradeship would exist as had been so that evening. It was'not altogether the shooting that counted but the meeting of old friends and the making of new ones. Shooting, to hi. mind, was one of the most sociable sports in existence (applause). On Saturday evening in the State Theatre, Carterton, during the suppei adjournment after the miniature rifle competition between the Bush District and Wairarapa team, a pleasant func tion took place. Mr L. J. Heayns president of the Bush District Miniature Rifle Association, said he had i pleasant duty to perform. This year his association had decided to hold it.' first annual championship meeting anc this was held in the Drill Hall Pahiatua, on July 1. To make sure his association would have a successful gathering they , had invited the cooperation of the secretary of the Wairarapa Association, Mr C. J DeLacey. Mr DeLacey had very willingly come to their aid and they had under his management made a success of the championship meeting. For this work their association felt they should recognise his valuable help and hac decided to make a presentation to him. He asked Mr DeLacey’s acceptance of a gold mounted fountain pen as a mark of respect and as some slight recognition of his services (applause). Mi Heayns incidentally expressed the wish that Mr DeLacey’s services would again be available for their nex championship gathering. Mr DeLacey thanked Mr Heayns for his kindly remarks and his goocwishes and for the splendid gift. He was completely taken by surprise anc said what he had done to help the Bush Miniature Rifle Association hac been a labour of love to him. He deeply appreciated the gift and the spirit in which it had been given: He was pleased that the Bush District hac started with a championship meeting and he felt sure with able manage meat and co-operation the annua event would be a profitable one to th' Bush District Miniature Rifle Association (applause).
