TOURNEV AT MASTERTON
FAST AND EXCITING PLAY. FINALS TO TAKE PLACE TONIGHT. The Wairarapa Badminton Association's fif\ annual Wairarapa Championship and handicap meeting was continued last night and until an early hour this morning, when most of the events were completed to the semifinals. A very high standard of play was in evidence in all the events. In the championship matches some fast and exciting play was witnessed. J. J. Payton, who was playing in top form, smashed and stroked accurately to enter into the championship singles final, and will play J. Lulham tonight. Payton and Lulham are expected to turn on the “fireworks” and the match is creating considerable interest.
J. E. Dwane, who played a marathon match with H. M. O'Connor, to win in the third set, will play Lulham in the semi-final of the men’s singles. Dwane and O’Connor played excellent badminton, but O’Connor could not quite get home. Mrs D. Young and Miss D. McCarthy (Taranaki) will play off in the championship singles, and a close match is expected, with Mrs D. Young the favourite. Miss McCarthy, although Taranaki’s first-ranked woman, will have a difficult task to beat her opponent. H. Dixon and C. Newland played splendidly to enter the men’s handicap doubles final. Misses Richards and Yates also did well, entering the B grade doubles final. P. Martin and F. Walker had a great duel. Walked played outstanding badminton.
Play will take place this afternoon and the finals will be played off tonight. when badminton of the highest standard should be witnessed. Mrs E. K. Eastwood, wife of the president of the Association, will present the trophy orders and certificates to the winners. The results are: — CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS Men’s Singles. Third round: P.
