After the usual seasonal lull, production activities at all studios are in full blast with nearly 50 big features before lhe cameras. M.G.M. alone will start 12 new pictures in the next two weeks. They are: "Babes in Arms,” with Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland; “Balalaika,” co-starring Nelson Eddy and Ilona Massey, foreign star,., who has been through a process of extensive grooming; “Ninotchka," which will bring Garbo back to the screen after a long absence; “Day at the Circus,” the Marx brothers; “North-West Passage,” Spencer Tracy, Bob Taylor, and a cast of 2,000; "Thunder Afloat,” Wallace Beery; “Blackmail,” Edward G. Robinson; Todd Browning’s “Miracles for Sale;” Sinclair Lewis’s “It Can’t Happen Here,” starring Lewis Stone; Winfield Sheehan’s production, “The Emperor’s Stallion;” “The Great Canadian,” Clark Gable, and several others.
