CARTERTON BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
TO BE MELD ON MARCH 7 NEXT.

The monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council was held last night, the Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner) presiding. There were also present: Councillors W. A. Hart, E. McKenzie H. Mortensen, L. M. Clark. C. Stevens C. J. DeLacey. Miss O. Wolters and R. Copeland. An apology for absence was received from Councillor J. Udy. The treasurer ieported a debit balance at the Bank of New Zealand 01 £547 7s 6d in the general account anc a credit balance to the gasworks account of £709 3s 6d. Accounts amounting to £987 3s 3c. (District Fund) and £270 Ils Id (Gasworks Account.) were passed for payment.
Mr Mackley, secretary to Wairarapa District Zone of the Now Zealand Centennial Celebrations and Memorial. Wellington Province, wrote notifying the chairman that Mr T. Jordan woulc. shortly convene a meeting of all local authorities in the Wairarapa group tc finalise matters in regard to the Centennial Celebrations, and asking the Carterton Borough Council to appoin, a date for its local celebration. . ft was resolved lhat Carterton in conjunction with the Wairarapa South County Council hold its celebration on Thursday, March 7; that Carterton's memorial be an alteration and improvement to its swimming baths and that in conjunction with the county subscriptions be raised on a Government subsidy basis.
The Carterton Methodist Church wrote protesting against organised games being played on Carrington Park on Sundays. After discussion it was resolved that the letter be received.
The Sanitary Inspector, Mr H. A. Trueman, submitted his quarterly report. Only one case in infectious disease (pulmonary tuberculosis) was reported in the Carterton borough during the three months. Foodseller’s premises were more or less satisfactory. Mr Trueman reported there was room for improvement in the disposal of refuse and collection of the same, ana asked that a weekly collection of domestic refuse be made. The matter of garden refuse should be dealt with by the occupant. The public should be educated and advised to burn all rubbish that can be so dealt with.
It was pointed out that a collection of refuse was made every three months and it was resolved to make a collection on the first Wednesday in each month. Attention is to be drawn to the proprietors of public halls in regard to the accumulation of rubbish. The Hon. W. G. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, wrote stating that Arbour Day would be observed on August 2 this year. The question of tree planting in Howard Street was brought up and it 'was mentioned that two settlers had written objecting to the planting of trees in the street. Nothing was done in regard to the latter matter. Councillors Wolters and Mortensen were authorised to sign the rate roll. The- reports of the Works Committee, the Overseer and the Gas Committees were read and adopted.
