PALMERSTON NORTH. This Day. A sentence of six months' imprisonment was passed by Mr Justice Blair on John Richards, aged 55. managing director of the Dominion Auctioneering Company, found guilty on six charges of fraudulent accounting under the Auctioneers' Act and one charge of the theft of 2s 3d. all the charges relating to transactions in fruit. Arthur Haines, aged 35. found guilty on the same charges, was admitted to three years’ probation and ordered to pay £3B towards the costs of the .prosecution

The Judge said auctioneers were very important persons in the community. because they were entrusted with the realisation of produce which was the work of other people. So much of New Zealand's income depended upon the produce of the land that any prejudicing of due realisations touched the incomes of a great many people.
