BLEAK WEATHER

CONDITIONS IN WAIRARAPA TODAY. FURTHER SNOW AT TE WHARAU. A bite in the atmosphere this morning reminded Masterton residents that snow was still a possibility, though most parts of the district appear to have escaped any further falls. Te Wharau. however, was not so fortunate. as snow and sleet again set in at about 8.30 o'clock this morning and the fall was continuing two hours later. A heavy frost had been experienced there in the early morning. The fall of snow at Te Wharau is the heaviest for a good many years.

Except in shady situations, the snow which fell in Masterton on Monday night had disappeared by yesterday afternoon, though this morning the remains of a tew snowmen provided evidence of the sport enjoyed by the younger fry. A frost of over 12 degrees was recorded in Masterton this morning. The Tararua Ranges are carrying a particularly thick coating of snow, which appears to be well distributed over the bush country as well as on the summits of the mountains. A strong southerly wind continues to sweep the district.

In Carterton a heavy frost was also experienced during the night and in the early hours of the morning hail and sleet fell, again covering the ground with a white mantle. Much the same conditions prevailed at Greytown and Featherston.

The Rimutaka Road has not been affected by this week's storm and cars are experiencing no trouble in negotiating the road.
