WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING OF MEMBERS. i ("Times-Age” Special.) i The monthly meeting of the Women's Institute was held in the hall when there was a good attendance of members despite the inclemency of the weather. The president (Mrs Spicer) presided. Apologies for ab sence were received from several members who were unable to attend owing to illness. The secretary presented a statement of accounts in connection with the recent ball, which shewed a substantial profit. Owing to the inclement weather which precluded visitors from attending, no demonstrations were given. Several competitions were held. Mesdames Priest, Marshall and Spicer being the winners. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Lovegrove, Linton and Leach. The judges for the cakes competition were Mesdames S. Mclntosh and Macdonald. GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND. The eliminating rounds for the sen ■ ior championship of the Pirinoa Golf Club were played on Saturday, G. Sutherland beating D. Jones and T. Hume accounted for G. Munro. In the junior championship, R. McDougall defeated S. Hall while F. Lovegrove lost to G. Hall. In the ladies' championship Mrs Sutherland beat Mrs Herangi by one up. Personal Items. Mr Bragg, Bluff, is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. Bragg. Mr E. C. Holmes. Te Hopai, has returned from, a visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mr and Mrs D. J. Mclntosh, of Dannevirke, and their children are staying with Mr and Mrs D. Mclntosh, Senr. Mr Stan Thomas, who has been indisposed, has greatly improved in health -and has commenced his duties. Mr T. Duffy, who was relieving, has returned to Martinborough. Mesdames Ridley and Rogers, who have been on a visit to their brother, Mr J. Duggan, have returned to Christchurch. Mr Tom Sargent is visiting relatives in Dannevirke. QUEEN CARNIVAL EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. At the euchre party and dance held in aid of the Queen Carnival funds, the prizes were won by Mrs Cowan and Mr T. Burling. The consolation prizes went to Mrs Sutton and J. Curtin. The music for the dance was supplied by a local orchestra. SUCCESSFUL CONCERT CHILDREN AND MAORIS. A most successful concert was given by the school children and a party of Maoris on Saturday evening in the Memorial Hall. There was a large attendance of residents. The first part of 'the programme consisted of items given solely by the children and eacn effort was vociferously applauded. The programme was: Opening action song

Mary Riwai; recitation, Nancy Mclntosh; pianoforte solo. Bessie Car ter; comic duet. P. Carter and W. Te Maari; duet, B. Swanson and N. McIntosh: action song Native children: vocal trio. H. Te Maari. M. Enoka and M. Riwai. In the second half. Mesdames Herangi. Riwai and Cowan and the Misses Piripi, Taurau and Messrs Herangi, Heta, Taurau and Waiwera contributed the items.

The proceeds from tine concert are in aid of ihe local candidate in the Queen contest.

BITTERLY COLD WEATHER

LOW LYING LAND UNDER WATER

The weather during the past week lias been bitterly cold and wet and conditions were most unfavourable. A; a result of the rain low lying lands arc well under water. The fall of snow during the week was the worst experienced for some years.
