KING’S COUNSEL
CALLING WITHIN THE BAR,
CEREMONY IN CHRISTCHURCH.
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH. This Day.
For the first time in Christchurch since pre-war days the ancient and curious ceremony of calling a newly appointed King’s Counsel within the Bar was performed in the Supreme Court today, when Mr W. J. Sim's letters patent of appointment were received by Mr Justice Callan. Mr Justice Northcroft was with Mr Justice Callan on the Bench. Mr Frederick Wilding was the only other K.C. present but there was a big gathering of the legal fraternity of Christchurch.
After the letters patent had been presented by the Registrar to Mr Justice Callan the latter invited Mr Sim to make the prescribed declaration and on the Judge's invitation Mr Sim walked into the front row of Counsels’ tables and bowed to the Judges and to Mr Wilding, who returned the bow. The new K.C. then turned and bowed to a junidr counsel in the row behind and in the body of the court, all the juniors rising and returning his bow. He then took his seat and the Judge asked: "Mr Sim, do you move?" Mr Sim replied by bowing and then retired.
